Heirloom Tomatoes and Native Bees

Watercolor, ink, and digital media, 2024

Watercolor illustration of various heirloom tomato varieties in vibrant colors and unique shapes, including round, ribbed, striped, and pear-shaped forms. The tomatoes range in hues of red, green, orange, yellow, and purple. Small details like tomato blossoms, a sprig of cherry tomatoes, and individual tomatoes are included. The composition is complemented by flying bees and other pollinators, emphasizing the connection between nature and the growth of these vegetables. Set against a light, neutral background, the artwork highlights the diversity and beauty of tomatoes.

This watercolor and ink illustration highlights the critical role native bees play in pollination, particularly for crops such as tomatoes. Unlike European honey bees, native bees use “buzz pollination”, and vibrate at a special frequency essential for releasing the pollen in tomato flowers.

One of the many native bees in the illustration includes the endangered Rusty Patched Bumble Bee, which hasn't been spotted in Maine since 2009. This illustration shows the critical connections between food and the environment. Through her work, Claire strives to inspire individuals to take action by planting pollinator-friendly gardens, and not using pesticides.

This artwork was created for the 2025 Common Ground Country Fair poster design contest, where it made it into the top 10.
