Illustrations for 'Live Free, Eat Well' by Adam Glick
Watercolor and digital media, 2024
Art Direction: Alex Rigby, Executive Editor at DK Publishing
Claire Loon Baldwin created chapter illustrations and end pages for Live Free, Eat Well, a cookbook by Adam Glick, published in 2024 by DK Publishing/Penguin Random House.
Adam Glick, a chef who has surfed, sailed, road-tripped, and camped across the world, brings an innovative approach to outdoor cooking. Claire drew inspiration from Adam's massive library of outdoor cooking videos on his social media channels, and referenced imagery from retro Boy Scout manuals, USGS maps, and explorer’s sketchbooks. The final illustrations weave together nature and narrative, and complement Adam's rugged food photography.
"Claire is an incredibly gifted artist and illustrator. It was an absolute pleasure to work with her on creating illustrations for the cookbook Live Free, Eat Well by Adam Glick here at DK/Penguin Random House. The beautiful endpapers she designed and the ten chapter opening illustrations she created add such a beautiful element to the book which took it to the next level. I could not recommend working with Claire enough!"

Watercolor Illustrations of Adventurous Campfire Foods
Claire's work for Live Free, Eat Well includes a seamlessly repeating pattern of illustrations for the end pages, and ten full-page chapter illustrations. She drafted the illustrations digitally in order to efficiently incorporate feedback from the author and editor, and then printed the line drawings onto Arches paper, and painted them with watercolor. She scanned the illustrations, and prepared the digital files to go to print.
Claire is an experienced backpacker, and has cooked over campfires in numerous national parks. Her watercolor illustrations of botanicals, wild foods, and rugged outdoor scenes are imbued with her deep love and respect for nature.
